METHOD:
Word search on ‘will of God’ and ‘God’s will’ in the Bible.
OBSERVATIONS: Paraphrase scripture
- Referring
to a trust in God’s plan with future events as if God has total control
- The
Spirit of God knows God’s will and the Children of God knows and does
God’s will
- It is
God’s will to bring us to repentance without regret through sorrow, which
leads us to salvation
- Will
of God is done from the heart and refuses to live for evil human desires
- It is
the will of God to be sanctified and abstain from sexual immorality
- God’s
will is: Be joyful always. Pray
continually. Give thanks in all
circumstances.
- Will
of God is to persevere and do right even if we suffer for doing good
- It’s
the will of God for church leaders to sacrificially, voluntarily and
tenderly showing their flock the way.
SUMMARY:
Often we say “if God wills” or “Insha’Allah” as if somehow we ‘let go’ of the
unknown and our own ‘control-issues’ to God as if we are saying ‘I am not
responsible for whatever happens next’ or ‘whatever happens, happens.’ The genuine hearts may refer to God’s will as
a process of relinquishing our controls over to God, with a total acceptance of
allowing God to guide us. In this sense,
we recognize that God has total control of our body, spirit, and mind, which is
really a perfection of the greatest commandment to “Love God with all our soul,
mind, heart, and strength.” However, I
suspect that most of us say ‘In God’s Will’ flippantly. Have we recognized and accepted that doing
‘God’s Will’ is actually as specific as the list given above? Let us take this more seriously and actually
do what we say!
On the other extreme, we can say ‘In God’s
Will’ almost fatalistically with a sense that “I can’t do anything about my
future, God has it all numbered and everything I do has already been
dictated.” This view absolutely lifts up
God’s sovereignty, which I think is awesome, but it does not take into account
that our all loving God is a God of relationships. He has created us, not as robots or chess-pieces
that have already had everything mapped out.
We just merely live as a programmed-shell that carry out whatever God
has in mind, like a robot would. No! God is mysterious. He doesn’t need us to exist. He is perfect and doesn’t need anything else
to satisfy Him. However, the truth is
that He did create us human beings, full of emotions, and full of capabilities
to do both good and evil … and to disobey Him.
It is almost like He created us for no other purpose other than letting
us develop freely as we will. As the
Bible points out to us, His will for us is to seek Him first and be fearlessly
generous and loving to our neighbors.
God wants us to tag along on this journey
with Him and witness firsthand who He is and how He works. God is also all about relationships. He communicates with us and allows us to
bargain with Him. We should be
transparent and make all of our needs and requests to God, and to offer Him our
very best. We should also confess all of
our failures and ask God for strength.
He has promised to answer ALL of our prayers. Amen.

George,
First, I am blessed that you are delving into the Word and processing ideas you have about your relationship with God. Thanks for including me in your journey.
My perspective on your blog about God's will might have a bit of a different spin. First, we have to understand who we are to God to begin to explore His will for us. We are human beings He created for relationship with Him. He created us with free will, not to disobey Him, but to give us the option to choose to be with Him and follow Him or to do our own Self will, which results in separation from Him. God does not, nor will He ever control us. Doing His will does not mean He has things all planned out and we need to figure out what that is and do that. He doesn't care if I go to Africa or downtown Seattle to serve Him - He cares about the condition of my heart and the spirit in which I chose to do anything I do. His will is that we are in relationship with Him, what we do to glorify Him in our lives comes from the heart of loving Him - not for ourselves out of loving ourselves. His will involves us making choices every day of our lives to honor and give all glory to Him - not seeking glory for ourselves. His will has nothing to do with directing the specifics of what we do - but at times He may speak a direction to us. It is His will that we ask Him for guidance and to let us know if what we are doing honors Him and will bring Him glory. Yes, it is His will that we do the things that keep us in right relationships with Him, even if we suffer from doing that. Christ tells us very specifically what is God's will for His kingdom dwellers. Mostly it is all about the condition of our hearts. Read Matt 5:1-12
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
I stand in admiration of the sincerity of your study and pursuit of God. Marilyn
Love the summary with key points about God's will. There's quite a bit we do know about His will, so we can be active in pursuing it. And what you've summarized isn't tedious, like giving thanks in all circumstances.
You've summarized well some key points of God's will. As you suggest, much of what His will is is knowable. And it's not tedious (to be thankful). I think that one thing to add is that we often speak confidently of the future, which is also in God's hands. So James adds that we need to say more often, 'if it is God's will...' But as you say, in some cultures, this can be said quite flippantly or as if there's nothing that can be done against God's will. Good thoughts.
Nice work, George. you reflect a balance and a nuance that i wish others could absorb! We seem to be afraid of the tensions that are evident in Scripture--we want nice tidy boxes that make it easy to explain God. Yet the Lord seems content to reveal both His sovereignty AND our free will as cooperative aspects of reality rather than dichotomies. Keep writing!!!!! blessings, my friend.
Gosh, you guys are awesome. I really am encouraged by each of your words. I also appreciate you for taking the time to teach me about what God is saying here.
It is so funny sometimes that God in His Word just throw all these complete paradoxes out there and then doesn't say enough to make sense of things. Then it really requires His Living Spirit to coach us and to fill in the spots.
It is so rich! Marilyn, as I was processing what you wrote, I got a sense that Christ the Messiah really embodies all that God wants from us. His desire for the Father, His obedience, His absolute love for the marginalized, His fearlessness to stand for injustice, His absolute unity as God... It also reminds me that I am dust, from dust I came and to dust I will return. The only meaning in life is not 'existing' but is the 'breath of life' that God breathed into each of us. We are His companion! We can be a complete failure, but God can still see us as His beloved... that is too mysterious for me to grasp. At the very least, I am a lover of God and He loves me. His hands that moves in our lives goes beyond what I can do for Him. I know we have work to do also. But, at the very least, I am accepted! I am included! I am embraced!
Brian, I always appreciate your words and encouragements.
Alan, it has been way too long. We need to catch up.
Thank you guys again for enriching my life and my thoughts. Please continue to pour...
George
Ah, the mystery! I love this discussion, thank you all for getting beyond the assumption that "sovereignty" means "total control." What a tyrranical sovereignty that would be! George, you are a man after God's own heart!
